Title: Why a Trip to the Dentist is a Lesson in Life

Updated: Jan 4

Kimesha Blackwood BScN, MEd.

I recently visited the dentist for my routine check-up and cleaning. If I’m being honest, going to the dentist is not on my list of favorite activities. The sounds, the tools, the bright lights it’s all a bit uncomfortable. But as I sat there, I realized something important: visiting the dentist isn’t just about oral health it’s a reflection of life itself.

Taking care of yourself, facing discomfort, and showing up for what’s necessary these are not just lessons for healthy teeth but for living a meaningful life.

1. Facing What We’d Rather Avoid

The dentist’s chair isn’t exactly a fun place to be, but it’s necessary. Avoiding it only leads to bigger problems cavities become root canals, and neglect leads to pain.

Life works the same way. The things we avoid whether it’s tough conversations, making a big decision, or dealing with challenges don’t just disappear. They grow and demand our attention in more difficult ways later. Facing things head-on, even when it’s uncomfortable, is how we prevent unnecessary pain in the future.

2. Real Self-Care Isn’t Always Glamorous

When we hear about self-care, we often think of candles, spa days, and indulgence. While those moments are important, real self-care is sometimes about doing what’s hard because it’s what you need.

Scheduling a dental visit, exercising, or setting boundaries may not feel glamorous, but these acts are the foundation of a healthier, happier you. Showing up for yourself, even in small ways, is one of the most powerful forms of self-love.

3. Small Steps Lead to Big Rewards

Every floss, rinse, and dental cleaning seems insignificant in isolation. But together, these small actions lead to a healthy, pain-free smile. Life is no different.

Consistency in the small, positive actions we take whether it’s saving money, practicing kindness, or investing in our health builds up over time. The rewards aren’t immediate, but they’re always worth it.

4. Life Lessons From the Dental Chair

Here are a few reflections from my recent visit that might resonate with you:

Endure the Moment, Enjoy the Results: The 30 minutes of discomfort during a cleaning is worth the fresh, clean feeling afterward. Likewise, enduring temporary challenges in life often leads to long-term joy.

Don’t Wait Until It Hurts: Pain is a sign we’ve ignored something for too long. Whether it’s your health, relationships, or personal goals, address issues early before they escalate.

You’re Stronger Than You Think: Sitting in the dentist’s chair, I reminded myself: I can handle this. It’s a small moment of resilience, but it translates to bigger challenges in life.

5. A Visit to the Dentist Is Self-Love

When I walked out of my appointment, my teeth didn’t just feel cleaner, I felt really good about my experience. I had shown up for myself and taken an important step toward my well-being.
